Effects of different polishing and glazing procedures on the surface roughness and wear behavior of dental Y-TZP zirconia ceramic

All-ceramic prosthetics have many advantages such as aesthetics, biocompatibility, and physical and mechanical properties, and have no impact on MRI examinations. They are popular among dentists and patients. However, the abrasion of all-ceramic materials on the natural tooth enamel is a major disadvantage. The all-ceramic prosthesis after clinical adjustment of grinding, due to its rough surface, will lead to a decrease in mechanical strength, exacerbate bacterial adhesion, plaque adhesion, and coloration of the prosthesis, and also increase abrasion on the jaw teeth. Therefore, the smooth surface treatment of all-ceramic materials in clinical occlusion, adjacency, and shape adjustment is particularly important.

Polishing can make the surface of zirconia all-ceramics achieve the same smooth effect as glazing, and its wear on natural tooth enamel is less than that of glazing all-ceramics. Therefore, the zirconia all-ceramic crown bridge can be surface polished after adjustment of occlusion, shape, etc. during initial wear to reduce wear on the enamel of the jaw.
